sync iPhone system 10 to iTunes 11.4 on MacBook Pro

I just updated my iPhone 5 to OS 10 and now I can no longer sync the phone with my MacBook Pro laptop running iTunes 11.4 on system 10.6.8

When connected, the phone asks whether to "trust" the computer. I select "trust" but a window on the computer pops up with message: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone 'Janet Katz' because an invalid response was received from the device."

Is there a work-around or setting that must be changed?

Hi Janet ...

The issue is that your Mac is running an outdated OS X v10.6.8. iTunes for Mac minimum requirement is v10.9.5 or later as noted here > http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

The alternative is to see if your Mac can upgrade to macOS Sierra > macOS - How to Upgrade - Apple

With Sierra installed you could run the latest version of iTunes 12.5.1 and should be able to sync your iPhone.

iOS 10 requires iTunes 12.5.1 or newer which in turn requires OSX 10.9.5 or newer. It may or may not be possible to upgrade your computer to the required system. Find your computer model on the http://www.everymac.com web site and near the bottom of the system specification section it will say what OS versions it is capable of running. If you cannot run a newer system you will not be able to sync this phone to your present computer. OSX 10.9 and 10.10 are no longer available. Check this article on upgrade options: If your Mac is not Compatible with Sierra but you Have Not Upgraded to El Capitan - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10692 El Capitan (OSX 10.11) and Sierra (OSX 10.12) may run slower on older machines and require additional RAM purchase (4 GB is a realistic minimum and many recommend 8GB). Doing a big jump in system versions is also more likely to affect old software.

Thank you for your prompt and detailed reply. Not what I wanted to hear.
Although I think the computer is capable of running newer system software, I have not upgraded MacBook Pro due to my reliance on specific software I use from Adobe.

My workaround that I am trying is to sync the iPad with the MacBook, which still syncs, then sync the iPad and iPhone through iCloud. Don't know if it has worked yet.
